All community pharmacies in Wales are now able to receive electronic prescriptions from GP practices through the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS).
The milestone marks a major step forward in the digital transformation of prescribing and dispensing in Wales. Led by the Digital Medicines Programme managed by Digital Health and Care Wales (DHCW), EPS is helping make the prescribing process easier, safer and more efficient for patients and healthcare professionals.
EPS allows prescriptions to be sent electronically from a GP practice to a patient’s nominated community pharmacy or dispenser, removing the need for the traditional green paper prescription form. The service also enables prescriptions to be tracked electronically, giving healthcare staff greater visibility of where a prescription is in the process.
As EPS becomes available in every community pharmacy in Wales, Mahshid Chegounchei, Pharmacist at Raglan Pharmacy, welcomed the introduction of the service and highlighted the benefits it is expected to bring.
Mahshid said: "It's fantastic to see community pharmacies across Wales now able to receive electronic prescriptions through EPS.
"By reducing reliance on paper prescriptions and providing greater visibility of where prescriptions are in the process, EPS makes the experience smoother for patients and supports more efficient ways of working for pharmacy teams.
"We're pleased to be part of this significant step forward for prescribing and dispensing in Wales and look forward to seeing the benefits continue to develop as adoption grows."
Since November 2023, more than 36 million prescription items have been successfully claimed through EPS, benefiting over one million patients. The service is now available in every community pharmacy in Wales, with up to 30 GP practices expected to go live each month ahead of the planned practice rollout by 30 November 2026.
Samantha Fisher, Chair of the Primary Care EPS Programme, said:
“Reaching this milestone is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the dedication of everyone who has played a part in delivering EPS across Wales.
“The benefits are already being felt by patients, general practice and pharmacy teams, from a more convenient prescription journey and improved visibility of prescriptions to less reliance on paper and more efficient ways of working.
“I would like to thank all those involved for their support and commitment in reaching this important stage in the rollout of EPS.”
Laurence James, Head of Medicines Programmes at DHCW, said:
"Reaching the milestone where every community pharmacy in Wales can now receive prescriptions digitally from GP practices through the Electronic Prescription Service is a significant achievement and a testament to all those involved. It represents years of partnership working between pharmacy teams, GP practices, system suppliers and partner organisations across the NHS and Welsh Government. These efforts are helping to deliver a more efficient, effective and streamlined prescribing service, improving the experience for both patients and healthcare professionals across Wales.”
EPS is already helping to reduce paper use, improve prescription tracking and save time for pharmacy and GP practice teams. Healthcare professionals have described the service as "game-changing", highlighting benefits such as fewer calls between pharmacies and GP practices, easier prescription tracking and improved efficiency.
Andrew Evans, Chief Pharmaceutical Officer for Wales, said:
"I am delighted that every community pharmacy in Wales is now able to receive electronic prescriptions through EPS, marking an important milestone in the modernisation of prescribing and dispensing services.
"EPS is already making more than one million people in Wales’ prescription journey more convenient, and is improving efficiency at pharmacies and GP practices. Removing paper prescriptions and the manual processes that go with them, is enabling pharmacists to spend more of their time supporting patients and carers, improving access to clinical services for patients, and taking pressure off other parts of the NHS.
The rollout of the Electronic Prescription Service is part of a much wider transformation of the role of community pharmacies and I look forward to seeing every patient and healthcare professional here in Wales benefit from the service as its use continues to expand."
Adoption of EPS continues to grow as DHCW works with partners to support the remaining GP practices to go live with the service.
