Apotec is the eighth supplier approved to roll out its Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) technology in community pharmacies in Wales.
After robust testing, Knights Balkwill Pharmacy in Porthcawl is the first pharmacy in Wales to use the Apotec CRM system to receive prescriptions electronically.
Reflecting on the implementation, Glenn Madden, Head of Wales at Knights Pharmacy, said: “EPS brings many efficiencies to the whole dispensing process, from initial request to final supply to our patients, which means we offer a quicker service across the whole process. It also allows key members of our pharmacy team to spend more quality time with our patients.
“It has been a great experience working with Apotec to help them gain their Welsh approval, as we have worked together to ensure the system works, with their enthusiasm second to none. A win-win for everyone involved.”
EPS enables prescriptions to be signed and sent electronically from GP practices to a patient’s nominated community pharmacy or dispenser, removing the need for the traditional green paper form to be printed and collected from the surgery. Prescriptions can be tracked from the practice to the dispenser, meaning staff can see at all times where it is.
Shanel Raichura, Clinical and Product Director, Apotec Ltd said: “Apotec is delighted to have been accredited to support the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) in Wales, fully aligned with the current FHIR data standard.
“As a company focused on community pharmacy, our priority is to make dispensing safer, faster and more efficient for pharmacy teams, so they can spend more time with patients and less time on manual processes. This milestone reflects our commitment to open standards, interoperability and supporting community pharmacies with modern digital tools that streamline the journey from prescription to dispensing and collection.
“We’re grateful for the support of Knights Pharmacy Group, whose collaboration and practical insights helped us successfully achieve accreditation.”
Samantha Fisher, Chair of the Primary Care EPS Programme, said: “We are now in a critical delivery stage for the EPS Programme, with a target to offer EPS to all General Practices and Community Pharmacies by 30 November 2026.
“As the eighth pharmacy system assured to roll out EPS across Wales, we are thrilled that Apotec can support in this ambition, driving forward benefits for both patients and healthcare professionals.
“With nearly all community pharmacies now live with EPS in Wales, I would like to say a big thank you and congratulations to all those involved in reaching this stage. Time savings, reduction of paperwork and overall convenience are just some of the benefits we are regularly hearing from clinicians, and it is great to see that EPS is making a real positive difference to communities.”
