The Data Protection and Digital Information Bill was introduced to the House of Commons and given its First Reading on the 18th July following publication of the government’s response to the Data: a New Direction consultation.
The Bill is intended to update and simplify the UK’s data protection framework to reduce burdens on organisations while maintaining high data protection standards, providing organisations with greater flexibility on how to comply with certain aspects of the data protection legislation.
An overview of the Bill, including proposed changes to the Data Protection Act 2018 and UK GDPR is provided within the Explanatory Notes. For those interested, the full Data Protection and Digital Information Bill as introduced is also available.
The Bill is scheduled to have its second reading on 5 September 2022, where MPs will have the opportunity to debate the main principles of the Bill.
