Google Transfer Appliance: Revolutionising Data Transfer

26 September 2024

The NDR team is using the Google Transfer Appliance as a proof of concept to securely and efficiently move large amounts of data from Digital Health and Care Wales (DHCW)’s on-premises repositories to the Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This project aligns with the DHCW strategy which outlines by 2030 we will have migrated all DHCW data stores to the NDR platform and supports the NDR goals to enhance data sharing and analysis.

The success of this project is a testament to the close collaboration between the NDR team and DHCW’s Operations Directorate.

The Google Transfer Appliance is a secure device designed to transfer vast amounts of data from data centres to the cloud. Pre-configured to specific needs, and encrypted, it operates offline for optimum security, ensuring safe data transfer to Google's infrastructure to be made available within the NDR platform.

DHCW has connected the appliance to its network and started to transfer a copy of the data. The device will then be transported to Google, where the data is transferred to the NDR platform before it can be decrypted.

The NDR team is copying data from national repositories, including WCRS, WRRS, WPRS and the national data warehouse to the NDR platform. Once transferred, the data will be organised using Google BigQuery, part of the National Data and Analytics Platform (NDAP).

The appliance ensures data security with encryption and tamper-resistant hardware. It is shipped securely, protecting the data throughout the process.

Cloud migration allows for easy data access, streamlined workflows, and powerful analysis with Google BigQuery, enhancing efficiency and decision-making.

The NDR team will use Google Cloud for advanced data analysis and set up regular updates to keep the cloud data current, to unlock its full potential. The NDR is entering phase 4 of the programme. During Q3 the NDR team will work closely with health and social care partners to develop a two-year programme delivery plan with DHCW to outline the approach and steps to align with overarching strategies.

There is training available through Google Cloud Skills Boost for anyone who would like to build skills in the use of GCP. To access the training, setup an account via https://www.cloudskillsboost.google/ using your NHS email address and contact stephen.shields@wales.nhs.uk if you require access to credits.
