Roll out of the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) in Wales, which is making a big difference to patients and healthcare staff, continues to gather pace.
Boots is the second pharmacy supplier to have its electronic prescription technology approved by Digital Health and Care Wales for use in its community pharmacies across the country. This follows completion of successful testing at its store in Llanfairfechan, Conwy, in partnership with the adjacent Plas Menai Surgery.
EPS allows GP surgeries to send prescriptions electronically to the patient’s choice of community pharmacy, without the need for the green prescription form.
It will make things easier and safer for patients and healthcare staff in Wales, as well as helping the environment by reducing the millions of paper prescription forms currently printed each year.
The move from green paper prescriptions to a digital service is one of the biggest changes to healthcare in decades and relies on GP and community pharmacy systems being able to send and receive electronic prescriptions securely.
Invatech was the first pharmacy supplier to successfully complete testing of its EPS technology for use in Wales. A number of other suppliers are also in the process of testing their pharmacy software for use in Wales, with roll out taking place as quickly and safely as possible.
The introduction of EPS across Wales is a key part of the Digital Medicines transformation programme, managed by Digital Health and Care Wales.
