I joined DHCW in October 2021 as a Band 3 Information Services Apprentice, and in July 2023 I applied for a Band 5 data analyst position within Information Services.
I was successful in my application. I still attend university one day a week to complete my data and information systems degree and I’m looking forward to graduation in 2025!
My new role hasn’t changed much for me. As an apprentice I was learning everything I needed to know to become a Data Analyst and by the time of applying I was confident in my abilities.
The apprenticeship has allowed me to learn technical skills in an education and a workplace setting, which has been invaluable to my role progression. Being able to achieve a Band 5 post before completing the degree is a big achievement.
I really enjoy the apprenticeship scheme because being able to apply what I learn in university, to real healthcare systems and scenarios allows me to make an impact and help people.
The apprenticeship doesn’t come without its challenges and requires commitment. Working 4 days a week and attending university for 1 day means that assignments can only be completed after work and at weekends.
However, whilst this is challenging and often results in long days in front of a computer screen, it is worth it, and I wouldn’t change a thing!
I’m very grateful to DHCW and UWTSD for this opportunity and I highly recommend apprenticeships to everyone!
