Clinical Coding Training Programme

Clinical coding training in Wales is delivered through a nationally coordinated programme provided by Digital Health and Care Wales (DHCW).

Please note: This training is exclusively available to individuals already currently employed in clinical coding roles within NHS Wales.

The programme includes:

  • A comprehensive 24-day Clinical Coding Standards Course provided by an approved trainer.

  • Three-yearly Clinical Coding Refresher Courses, designed to cover recent changes to coding standards.

  • Support for the National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ), such as mock exams and preparation support.

 

Coding staff also benefit from access to specialist e-learning modules covering conditions and procedures like cataracts, COVID-19, fracture fixations, and heart failure which are available via the On Demand Training Centre, to improve coding accuracy and quality

For those who wish to specialise further, NHS England offers courses in Auditing and Training other coders, for coders with a minimum of three years practical experience and the NCCQ.

Further opportunities for continuing professional development are available through organisations like IHRIM and FEDIP.
