Here you will be able to access a range of information about clinical classifications (often referred to as ‘clinical coding’) and their use in describing NHS Wales healthcare activity.
The NHS Wales Clinical Classifications service is managed by the Clinical Classifications Team which forms part of the Digital Strategy Directorate of the Digital Health and Care Wales (DHCW).
The team are primarily responsible for carrying out the following functions:
Supporting Welsh Government in the development of policy, clinical classifications standards and guidance for clinical coding services in NHS Wales.
Promoting joint working with regard to clinical classifications and clinically coded data across NHS Wales.
Act on behalf of NHS Wales on relevant expert national (UK) clinical classification boards and forums, such as the UK Classifications Technical Advisory Committee and National Clinical Coding Qualification Exam Board.
Maintain and organise the national clinical coding training programme on behalf of NHS Wales.
Review and maintain the national NHS Wales clinical classifications standards, which can be viewed via the NHS Wales Clinical Classifications Standards Dictionary.
Respond to queries from the Welsh clinical coding service raised via the national helpdesk.
Plans and implements a national programme of clinical classifications audit for NHS Wales.
