Introduction

The NHS Wales App (the App) is currently in public beta. This means the service is live and available to the public, but it’s still being developed and tested. All GP practices in Wales are live on the App.

The App enables patients to:

  • search for medical advice from the NHS 111 Wales online service
  • set their organ and blood donation preferences
  • discover other health and care services, such as screening programmes

Depending on the services your practice offers, your patients will also be able to:

  • book and cancel appointments
  • order repeat prescriptions
  • view their GP health record (summary care record and potentially detailed coded record) securely
  • use My Health Timeline and My Health Journal

More NHS Wales features will be added in the future. This toolkit will be updated as they become available.

Benefits to your GP practice

The App:

  • supports time-critical activities for staff, such as freeing up time previously spent at reception to book appointments and take repeat prescription orders over the phone
  • provides easier and more convenient access for patients to practice services, at a time that suits them
  • helps improve patient care by supporting digital access to services

Who can use the NHS Wales App

To use the NHS Wales App, patients must:

  1. Be registered with a GP practice in Wales.
  2. Be aged 16 or over.
  3. Be able to prove their identity.
  4. Have their own individual email address. This acts as a unique identifier to register with NHS login.
  5. Have a mobile phone number, or landline number, for two-factor authentication. This phone number can be shared between patients. Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a security method requiring two different forms of identification to verify a user's identity before giving access to resources and data.

Patients can download the App from the App store or Google Play (search “NHS Wales app”), or use it through a web browser at https://app.nhs.wales or https://ap.gig.cymru

Patient access to GP services

To be able to sign in and use the App, patients must have an NHS login.

There are 2 levels of verification available on NHS login.

  1. Medium level verification. The patient provides their NHS number, date of birth and the postcode of their home address as registered with their GP practice. This level of access does not allow access to personal information, services like appointments or prescription ordering or health records on the App.
  2. High level verification. The patient must prove who they are with a valid photo ID and face scan or video, or with the Welsh Identity Verification Service.

There are 2 options for a patient to verify their identity for high level verification:

  1. If the patient has photo ID, for example a passport or driving licence, and is comfortable uploading a photo of their ID and recording a short video, they can complete the process online.
  2. Using the Welsh Identity Verification Service (WIVS). This option is for patients who do not have the required photo ID listed on NHS login.

Patients will need to have their identity verified by their practice. Once verified, they will receive an identity verification letter and can then complete the steps using NHS login. It will be live at all practices across Wales by the end of April 2025.

Authorised access (manage health services for others)

Authorised Access will be available within the NHS Wales App. This will allow patients to use the App on behalf of another patient registered within the same practice. More details will be available soon.
