National project to Stop a Stroke supported by Audit+ technology
 
The NHS Wales Informatics Service has developed a module in the Audit + software tool to support the national "Stop a Stroke" project.

Over seven thousand people in Wales suffer a stroke every year.  The "Stop a Stroke" project focuses on atrial fibrillation (AF), a common cardiac arrhythmia which is a factor in 20% of strokes.

The Audit+ module identifies patients with AF and what their current medications are. GPs can then review patients to see if they are prescribed anticoagulant medications which can reduce the risk of a stroke by two thirds.

"This recent enhancement to the already successful Audit+ tool has a real benefit for patients in Wales. It allows General Practice teams to review medications and call in patients for a review as appropriate," says  Simon Scourfield, our Primary Care Operations Management Lead.

Audit+ is a GP data quality, audit and reporting software tool delivered and supported by the NHS Wales Informatics Service  available to all general practices across Wales. It  provides a common platform in Wales which can readily be built upon to provide tailored modules - like the AF module for example - to support practices and improve patients' lives.
Providing the Infrastructure for a National Academy
   
NHS Wales Informatics Service has been working closely with the National Imaging Academy Development to provide the infrastructure for the new National Imaging Academy Wales.

The Academy, which opened in August, enables an increase in capacity for radiologist training in Wales to help address the shortage of radiologists.  The creation of this Imaging Academy provides a protected training environment in addition to the hospital placements with workstation classrooms.

NHS Wales Informatics Service has provided the expertise to equip the Academy with the required technology to support its aims, from the purpose built lecture theatre with interactive capability and camera to record lectures to video conferencing hubs. The major development is the collaboration with FujiFilm, providers of the national Picture Archiving and Communications Service (PACS), to provide state of the art imaging workstations where trainers and trainees will be able to access radiology images from across NHS Wales.

"We are really excited to be able to establish the Imaging Academy," says  Dr Phillip Wardle, the Clinical Lead for the National Imaging Academy Development. "This is first aimed at radiologists but the intention is to soon extend this training to advanced practice radiographers and sonographers. The academy will also serve as a natural hub for the diagnostic imaging community in Wales and hopefully help achieve our ambitions in research and innovation."

Analysing, examining, verifying
 
In upcoming months, we'll be speaking with some movers and shakers in the informatics field - getting their views on the whats, whys and hows of healthcare technology in Wales.

Recently, we spoke to Rob Murray, our Software Testing Manager. Rob heads up our testing team -  all of whom have globally-recognised certification - and asked him about the work the team does and why it's so important. 
 
Q: So what does the testing team do?
A: My team carry out the systems integration testing for NHS Wales Informatics Service.  What this means is ensuring we deliver good quality, safe and reliable products. In addition we work closely with our security and infrastructure teams to undertake penetration and operational acceptance testing.

Q: How does this work in practice?
A: We follow a test framework - working on a principle of "test early and test often."  In a typical approach we would create a test plan, produce test scripts, execute these tests, record any defects and then produce a test report.  As a team, we are an independent voice. We need to be confident that a change that happens in one system will not affect another because so many of our products are interlinked.

Q: Why is testing so important?
A: As humans we are born testers.  We test things to improve things. It's how the human race has evolved.  Children are natural testers. They do it instinctively in play.  Adults, in general, lose this sense of curiosity and it has to be re-found, although we are still predisposed to test somethings, like test driving a car for example.

Testing for IT is even more important.  What we do has a direct impact on patient care.  We need to ensure that software is safe.  However, if requirements are clear and the software is built to specification then testing should be an anti-climax.

Q: How do you evidence your testing?
A: We undertake different types of testing; functional, regression and penetration.  This is captured in the test management tool we use.  We then produce our test reports and make our recommendation as to whether it is safe to proceed.  It's not an easy task with so many interlinked products and only a small team of just over twenty staff.  However, the consequences of minimising testing are vast and could result in delays in patient care. 

Q: What are the plans for the future?
A: I'd like the team to be able to offer an automated testing function, creating automated test cases that would replace some of our manual regression testing, streamlining the testing process and increasing repeatability. Like all things, to reach this point requires investment in time, resources and software tools.

Registration opens for Digital Health and Care Wales 2018
 
The second Digital Health and Care Conference Wales provides a key opportunity to explore how better use of technology and data can drive the developments needed to transform outcomes for patients and citizens in Wales. 
 
This is a conference run jointly by Welsh Government, NHS Wales Informatics Service and the Welsh NHS Confederation,  and takes place at Cardiff City Stadium on 7 and 8 November, 2018.
 
This year the event spans two days and will feature keynote presentations providing insights into how digital has the power to accelerate transformation of service delivery.  It will also address the challenges of harnessing cultural change to accelerate adoption of new systems.  There will be also be a range of breakout sessions, plus a knowledge exchange marketplace, providing the opportunity to get under the bonnet of national products and new locally-driven innovations. 
 
We are delighted that Andrew Goodall, NHS Wales Chief Executive, will speak at the conference and the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Vaughan Gething, will deliver a keynote speech.
 
This event is open to staff working in the public sector in Wales including: health, social care, housing, the voluntary sector, research, policy, technology and academia, who are interested in how digital technologies can be used to support improvement and innovation.

Prosiect cenedlaethol, Stopio Strôc, yn cael cefnogaeth technoleg Audit+ 
 
Mae Gwasanaeth Gwybodeg GIG Cymru wedi datblygu modiwl yn yr offeryn meddalwedd Audit+, i gefnogi'r prosiect cenedlaethol, "Stopio Strôc".
 
Mae dros 7,000 o bobl yng Nghymru yn dioddef strôc bob blwyddyn. Mae'r prosiect " Stopio Strôc " yn canolbwyntio ar ffibriliad artrïaidd (AF), arrhythmia cardiaidd cyffredin sy'n ffactor mewn 20% o strociau.
 
Mae'r modiwl Audit+ yn amlygu cleifion â ffibriliad artrïaidd, a beth yw eu meddyginiaethau presennol. Gall meddygon teulu adolygu cleifion i weld a oes ganddynt bresgripsiwn ar gyfer meddyginiaethau gwrthgeulydd, a all leihau'r risg o strôc o ddwy ran o dair.
 
"Mae'r gwelliant diweddar hwn i'r offeryn Audit+, sydd eisoes yn llwyddiannus, yn cynnig budd gwirioneddol i gleifion Cymru. Mae'n darparu llwyfan cyffredin yng Nghymru, y gellir adeiladu arno'n hawdd, i ddarparu modiwlau teilwredig - fel y modiwl ffibriliad artrïaidd, er enghraifft - i gefnogi meddygfeydd a gwella bywydau cleifion.
Darparu'r Seilwaith ar gyfer Academi Genedlaethol
   
Mae Gwasanaeth Gwybodeg GIG Cymru wedi bod yn gweithio'n agos â Datblygu Academi Delweddu Genedlaethol i ddarparu'r seilwaith ar gyfer Academi Delweddu Genedlaethol newydd Cymru.
 
Mae'r Academi, a agorodd ym mis Awst, yn galluogi cynnydd mewn gallu ar gyfer hyfforddi radiolegwyr yng Nghymru, i helpu mynd i'r afael â phrinder radiolegwyr. Mae creu'r Academi Delweddu hon yn darparu amgylchedd hyfforddi wedi'i ddiogelu, yn ogystal â lleoliadau'r ysbyty gydag ystafelloedd dosbarth â gweithfannau.
 
Mae Gwasanaeth Gwybodeg GIG Cymru wedi darparu'r arbenigedd i roi i'r Academi y dechnoleg ofynnol i gefnogi ei nodau, o ddarlithfa bwrpasol gyda gallu rhyngweithiol, a chamera i recordio darlithoedd, i ganolfannau fideo-gynadledda. Yn ystod y misoedd nesaf, byddwn ni'n siarad â rhai pobl ddylanwadol yn y maes gwybodeg - i gael eu safbwyntiau ynghylch 'beth, pam a sut' am dechnoleg gofal iechyd yng Nghymru.
 
Yn ddiweddar, siaradom â Rob Murray, ein Rheolwr Profi Meddalwedd. Mae Rob yn arwain ein tîm profi - ac mae gan bob un ohonynt arystiad a gydnabyddir yn fyd-eang - a gofynnom iddo am y gwaith y mae'r tîm yn ei wneud, a pham ei fod mor bwysig. 
 
C: Beth mae'r tîm profi yn ei wneud?
A: Mae fy nhîm yn cyflawni profion integreiddio systemau ar gyfer Gwasanaeth Gwybodeg GIG Cymru. Beth mae hyn yn ei olygu yw sicrhau ein bod ni'n cyflwyno cynhyrchion diogel, dibynadwy, o ansawdd da. Hefyd, rydym ni'n gweithio'n agos gyda'n timau diogelwch a seilwaith i gyflawni profion derbyniad gweithredol a threiddio.
 
C: Sut mae hyn yn gweithio'n ymarferol?
A: Rydym ni'n dilyn fframwaith profi - gan weithio ar egwyddor o "brofi'n gynnar a phrofi'n aml." Mewn dull nodweddiadol, byddem ni'n creu cynllun prawf, yn cynhyrchu sgriptiau prawf, yn gweithredu'r profion hyn, yn cofnodi unrhyw ddiffygion, ac yna'n cynhyrchu adroddiad prawf. Fel tîm, rydym ni'n llais annibynnol. Mae angen i ni fod yn hyderus na fydd newid a wneir i un system yn effeithio ar un arall, oherwydd mae cymaint o'n cynhyrchion yn gydgysylltiol.
 
C: Pam mae profi mor bwysig?
A: Fel bodau dynol, rydym ni'n brofwyr.  Rydym ni'n profi pethau i wella pethau. Dyma sut mae'r hil ddynol wedi datblygu.  Mae plant yn brofwyr naturiol. Maen nhw'n gwneud hyn wrth reddf wrth chwarae.  Mae oedolion, yn gyffredinol, yn colli synnwyr chwilfrydedd, ac mae'n rhaid ei ail-ganfod, er ein bod ni'n dal i fod yn rhagdueddu i brofi rhai pethau, fel profi gyrru car, er enghraifft.
 
Mae profi ar gyfer TG hyd yn oed yn fwy pwysig.  Mae beth rydym ni'n ei wneud yn cael effaith uniongyrchol ar ofal cleifion. Mae angen i ni sicrhau bod meddalwedd yn ddiogel. Fodd bynnag, os yw'r gofynion yn glir, a bod y meddalwedd wedi cael ei greu i fanyleb, yna dylai profi fod yn syml.
 
C: Sut ydych chi amlygu eich profion?
A: Rydym ni'n cyflawni gwahanol fathau o brofion; gweithredol, atchwel a threiddio. Caiff hyn ei amlygu yn yr offeryn rheoli profion a ddefnyddiwn.  Rydym ni wedyn yn cynhyrchu ein hadroddiadau prawf, ac yn cyflwyno ein hargymhellion ynghylch a yw'n ddiogel symud ymlaen ai peidio. Nid yw'n dasg hawdd, gyda chymaint o gynhyrchion cydgysylltiol, a thîm bach o ychydig dros 20 o staff.  Fodd bynnag, mae canlyniadau lleihau profion yn helaeth, a gallai arwain at oedi mewn gofal cleifion.
 
C: Beth yw'r cynlluniau ar gyfer y dyfodol?
A: Hoffwn i'r tîm allu cynnig swyddogaeth profi awtomatig, a fyddai'n creu achosion prawf awtomatig a fyddai'n disodli rhai o'n profion atchwel â llaw, yn symleiddio'r broses profi, ac yn cynyddu ailadroddadwyedd. Fel popeth, i gyrraedd y pwynt hwn, mae angen buddsoddi mewn amser, adnoddau ac offer meddalwedd.

Fe wnaeth ail Gynhadledd Iechyd a Gofal Digidol Cymru ddarparu cyfle allweddol i archwilio sut gall defnydd gwell o dechnoleg a data hybu'r datblygiadau sydd eu hangen i drawsnewid canlyniadau i gleifion a dinasyddion Cymru.  
 
Mae hon yn gynhadledd a gynhelir ar y cyd gan Lywodraeth Cymru, Gwasanaeth Gwybodeg GIG Cymru, a Chonffederasiwn GIG Cymru, ac fe'i cynhelir yn Stadiwm Dinas Caerdydd ar 7 ac 8 Tachwedd 2018.
