e-Library boosted with new resources and investment

The NHS Wales e-Library for Health is benefitting from a major investment from Welsh Government allowing for new information resources, including further collections and databases.

NHS Wales Informatics Service has managed the e-Library for many years with ongoing support from librarians across all the health boards and trusts.

The investment has allowed the e-Library to expand its collection. Over the last five months, the library has procured over 1,500 additional e-journals from a range of publishers, four point of care tools and one e-learning package. By January 2019, the e-Library will also have new databases and supporting systems in place.

These new e-resources are now accessible to all NHS Wales staff, contract holders (GPs, Optometrists, Dentists, Community Pharmacists and Social Workers), trainees, trainers and students on placement.

"I am pleased that health and care professionals will have equitable access to a wide range of online, high quality, evidence-based information to support their education, training, research, development and daily work delivering care," says Rhidian Hurle, Chief Clinical Information Officer for NHS Wales.

Nurturing the next crop of informatics

Four new apprentices have joined our cyber security team, acquiring valuable experience while working toward their university degree.

The degree apprenticeships stem from a partnership between NHS Wales Informatics Service and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) and funded through the Wales Institute for Digital Information (WIDI), creating opportunities for new talent in health informatics.

The new apprentices will be working one day per week at university and four work-based days with our cybersecurity team.

Alongside these apprentices, five existing staff within NHS Wales Informatics Service are starting new apprenticeships working toward IT degrees with UWTSD.
