Interim Chair of Digital Health and Care Wales announced

We are very pleased that Bob Hudson OBE has been appointed by the Welsh Government as the
Interim Chair of Digital Health and Care Wales.

Digital Health and Care Wales is a new Special Health Authority that will replace the NHS Wales Informatics Service on 1 April 2021, and its establishment recognises the value of digital technology as a key enabler of change.

In a written statement Vaughan Gething Minister for Health and Social Care said: "Mr Hudson has had significant Board-level experience within the NHS including four roles as Chief Executive, including leading the establishment of Public Health Wales NHS Trust as a national body. In addition, Mr Hudson was Director of Strategy for Health and Social Services in Welsh Government. In his final role prior to retirement, Mr Hudson was Director of the NHS Wales Collaborative, during which he co-ordinated the work of NHS organisations across Wales on a series of major strategic change projects.

"His experience across Welsh Government and the NHS in Wales will be an important advantage in establishing DHCW and its place within the NHS Wales family.  Mr Hudson's experience will enable him to build effective relationships between Welsh Government, DHCW, Health Boards and Trusts, Health Education Improvement Wales and the wider health and care sector."

Helen Thomas, interim CEO NHS Wales Informatics Service, said; "
This is an incredibly important time, and Mr Hudson's wealth of experience is exactly what is needed to head up the Board of Digital Health and Care Wales and to help shape the future of digital health tech services.  We look forward to working with him."

All Wales hospital pharmacy system goes live in Aneurin Bevan

In readiness for the opening of The Grange University Hospital in November 2020, hospitals in Aneurin Bevan University Health Board are the first in Wales to implement a new pharmacy system as part of a major plan to modernise pharmacy and prescribing.

The modern pharmacy system offers a more efficient and consistent way of working across hospitals in Wales. The system links medication dispensing and usage data by using nationally recognised standards, allowing for a more comprehensive, real-time view of information. This marks the first step in the journey to implement national electronic prescribing and medicines administration.

Colin Powell, Chief Pharmacist - Acute Services at Aneurin Bevan, said "This will be a new way of working for hospital pharmacy, with improved data and reporting to shape future services."

The system, developed by WellSky, is designed to improve the accuracy of computerised dispensing and medicines stock management. Replacing 30-year-old software, the system will provide better performance, greater reliability and more efficient medicines management. It will also improve the clarity of data recorded, ensuring further compliance with national governance, meaning safer and more consistent patient care.

The NHS Wales Informatics Service, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and WellSky will implement the system at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Nevill Hall Hospital, Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, The Grange University Hospital and Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan from 9th November 2020. The rollout of this system to the remaining health boards will continue through 2020 until July 2021.
New website aims to improve health outcomes to the people of Wales using data dashboards

A new website has been launched to showcase the national  Value in Health programme in Wales.
This programme of work is striving towards achieving a value-based healthcare approach across NHS Wales and supporting the four principles of prudent healthcare.

The vision is to work collaboratively with organisations to improve the health outcomes that matter most to the people of Wales. NHS Wales Informatics Service (NWIS) is actively supporting the programme through the development of information products and analysis, bringing together nationally collected data from patients, clinical outcomes , patient reported outcomes and financial costing to inform a value-based approach to service transformation and sustainability.

The website was officially launched following the recent 'Value in Health' week (12th-16th October 2020), where two new data dashboards also made their debut.

Sally Cox, Principal Specialist (Information) at NWIS presented the dashboards at the event. She said: "The Information Services Value Based Health Care team released two more data dashboards for the national Value in Health team as part of 'Value in Health Week':  The Heart Failure dashboard and the Knee Arthroplasty dashboard. The dashboards have been produced for clinicians, health board planners, managers and service users to support direct care, service planning and quality improvement.

This release marks the first phase of these dashboards and it is hoped that these dashboards will evolve and be steered by the expert reference groups going forward."

Please note: The dashboards are available collectively to all within the NHS. Expert users and those with the required access can access more detailed versions of the dashboards through requesting access via their Head of Information or Caldicott Guardian.
