Choose Pharmacy saving on GP visits

Four out of every five people using the Choose Pharmacy service for help with common ailments would have visited their GP, if Choose Pharmacy was not available,
according to a survey conducted by NHS Wales Informatics Service.
Figures collected for six months show that Choose Pharmacy took pressure off GPs by offering an alternative for help with conditions such as, head lice, indigestion, diarrhoea, sore throat, acne, eye infections, dermatitis and chicken pox.

Choose Pharmacy is an NHS service, enabled by technology developed by the NHS Wales Informatics Service. Pharmacists keep a pharmacy record for each patient and are able to supply medicines for these common ailments without a prescription.

Between June and December last year nearly 8,500 people used Choose Pharmacy at 300+ pharmacies. If the service was not available, 81% said they would have made an appointment to see their GP. The remaining patients indicated they would have called an Out of Hours doctor or NHS Direct, visited A&E at their local hospital, bought over the counter medication, or made an appointment with another professional, such as an optician or dentist, nurse or health visitor.

Choose Pharmacy also supports some pharmacists to issue emergency prescription medication and for patients' hospital discharge information to be shared with a nominated pharmacist so a follow-up review can be completed by the pharmacist.

Choose Pharmacy is currently available at over 66% of community pharmacies in Wales with rollout currently proceeding to all remaining pharmacies.

A growing collection

The NHS Wales e-Library - the digital source for knowledge and evidence - has been boosted by the addition of more than four hundred new e-journals published by Wiley and Mark Allen publishing groups, including Journal of Advanced Nursing, British Journal of Surgery, British Journal of Healthcare Assistants, and Paramedic Practice and British Journal of Healthcare Management.

The new e-journals are accessible though the e-Library's A-Z list and add to the already rich volume of 3000+ subscription and OpenAccess e-journals, bibliographic and full text databases, point of care tools and a variety of other e-resources.

"We're excited to provide access to these new e-journals which help to broaden the subject range of the e-Library," says Rachel Sully, NHS Wales Informatics Service's Librarian Specialist. "These high quality, peer-reviewed e-journals help support clinicians with their practice by allowing access to the latest evidence-based research."

Staff on NHS Wales premises won't need to log-in to access the e-journals but if you want to use them from home you must access the e-library through an OpenAthens account.

For help or training on how to use any of the e-resources, contact your local health board or trust's library and for any other feedback contact [email protected].

GP systems and services contract announced

A new framework contract to supply GP IT systems and services to NHS Wales has been awarded to Vision (InPractice Systems Ltd) and Microtest Ltd.

The contract award was announced last month following a robust and rigorous procurement, overseen by the national GMS IM&T Programme Board. The contact is effective for a four-year period from January 2019, with the option to extend for up to a further two years.

The successful tenders demonstrated a strong commitment and ability to meet core GMS clinical / technical requirements and the wider Primary Care agenda, as well as further integration with the NHS Wales' digital services platform and strategic requirements.

A third tender, submitted by EMIS Health Ltd, did not meet a number of the necessary evaluation criteria relating to the financial, contractual and functional requirements as set out in the procurement, including within the core GMS clinical / business requirements, support for the wider Primary Care agenda in Wales and further integration with the NHS Wales digital services platform and national systems. This means practices currently using EMIS systems will need to choose an alternative system.

Getting to know you

A group of GP practices in South Wales have been delighted with a new tool to assist them in effective communications between themselves, and within their surgeries.

The GP 'Skype for Business' tool makes communication between Practice Managers and their staff and health boards considerably easier.

"It's an extremely useful and powerful tool" said Business Manager at Risca Surgery, Gareth Thomas. "We're spread around different places, so when we need to call a meeting, it can be difficult to get everyone together, but Skype fixes that."

Risca Surgery in Newport is one of nine practices to receive the tool as part of a pilot project, before it is rolled out across all practices in Wales in 2018. Gareth and his IT manager Lynne Carter, have found it particularly useful as they have to manage four sites, with 25,000 patients.

"We wouldn't want to be without it now," Lynne said. "We use it every day - the instant messaging is really helpful, we use it more than e-mail for communicating between managers."

Skype is also used for webinars, group meetings and conferences, even allowing users to send documents and other attachments to members of the group.

Gareth has also found its helped with working as part of a wider team, getting in touch with peers and saving travel costs and time.

"Sometimes I need to be here," he said, "dealing with patient queries, staff or doctor queries, or a health board issue. But now I can participate in meetings without having to travel."

Skype for Business is made available through our Primary Care programme and is scheduled to be rolled out to all GP practices in Wales in 2018. Read more about how "Skype for Business" is helping practices communicate on our NHS Wales Informatics Service website.

Processing through automation

NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership (NWSSP) is using software based robotic process automation (RPA) technology supported by the Informatics Service to help staff automate business process activities, for instance processing of vast amounts of data and ensuring operational data held in multiple systems are kept in sync at all times.

The aim is to perform activities more quickly, with less errors and operate on a 24/7 basis. In turn, this frees up time and resources.

The RPA software, Blue Prism, captures, interprets, and processes data from any application systems (such as procurement, financial, recruitment  and ESR systems), applies business logics and performs a range of tasks on the data. The specific tasks performed span a wide spectrum - for example updating records in multiple application systems, generating emails, generating service point tickets, scheduling reports, and performing audit checks.

NWSSP has completed a pilot phase and is scheduled to extend the present national services with infrastructure support from NHS Wales Informatics Services.

Informatics Service becomes first in the UK to achieve new Valuing People standard

The NHS Wales Informatics Service has become the first organisation in the UK to receive the new " British Standard for Valuing People" by the British Standards Institution (BSI).

The 'BS 76000' standard is built around the premise that people are an organisation's biggest asset and should be treated as such.

"We're thrilled to be the first in the UK to achieve this. It shows our organisation wants to get the most out of its staff, and we want our employees to get the most out of their working life," says NHS Wales Informatics Service Workforce and Organisational Development Manager, Sarah Brooks. " The BS 76000 is all about our staff and developing the organisation to be the best it can be. "

The standard will be continuously reviewed, with the first review in November. Staff are encouraged to submit ideas for improvements in ways of working or toward service delivery.

BSI, founded in London in 1901, is one of the world's largest certification bodies, operating  in 182 countries and responsible for the UK publication of international and European standards.
